Olaf Van Gonnissen became known through his concerts together with Michael Teuchert as the Frankfurter Gitarrenduo. He is a member of: Mutare Ensemble Frankfurt, United Guitars, Ensemble Rilegato, Quartetto MaGiCo, Opal Gitarren Quartett and Aria-Quintett.

In addition to this he has made appearances as a member of various chamber music groups. Besides his teaching post at the Akademie für Tonkunst in Darmstadt and his professorship at the Musikhochschule in Hamburg he is a lecturer at diverse master classes and festivals, a juror at many international competitions and joint-editor of the new Karl Scheit Gitarren Edition at the Universal Edition publishing house.

He has a special interest in practising the performance of old music on historical instruments such as lute, vihuela and baroque guitar.
